Using a pond de-icer over winter is a must for all ponds containing fish.  Pond de icers are not “pond heaters”.  They do not heat the water they keep an area of your pond ice free.  Keeping an area of your pond ice free using a pond de icer is extremely important to let toxic gasses escape from the water and let oxygen to enter the water.  In most cases pond de icers are not expensive and cost little to run.
